When Tess started printing custom stationery back in the late 90s as a side hustle, there was no big business plan, no dream of attending stationery shows, or collaborating with big name brands. Egg Press was born with the simple desire for better, more beautiful ways to correspond and connect. 20 years later, Egg Press has grown from a one-woman shop to a team of 20, who design, print, and bring to market over 750,000 letterpress greeting cards per year, sold in over 1,000 shops across the world. It’s been 20 years of experimenting and evolving our relationship with this +500-year-old printing process, keeping analog relevant in a tech-saturated world.
Over the past two decades, Portland has transformed into a vibrant maker-culture where handmade heritage crafts have been reimagined and reborn. Personal computers, the internet, smartphones, and social media have evolved and changed the fibers of our lives, yet we find ourselves more passionate than ever about this vintage process, and the human touch it allows. In the early 2000s, we found a sweet spot with independently owned businesses who believed in our unique organic style, patterns, color palette, playful humor, and the finished quality that only letterpress can offer. Powell’s Books, Oblation Papers and Press, New Seasons Market, and Tender Loving Empire were early believers in Egg Press, and helped curate the growth and support for independent artistry in Portland. From inviting strangers to write with us, to printing badges for TedxPortland every year, to providing local schools with curriculum and letter writing supplies for their students, we owe a lot of our success to the city that’s raised us, inspired us, and cheered us on over the years.
